Nepal: 25 killed, 45 hurt in Palpa bus mishap

The mangled remains of the passenger bus that veered off the road and fell into a maize field at Laghuwa in Deurali VDC in Palpa on Monday.

Twenty-five persons were killed when a passenger bus heading from Butwal through Tansen to Gulmi’s Tamghas skidded off the road at Laghuwa in Palpa’s Deurali VDC this morning.


Forty-five others were injured in the mishap. They have been admitted to the mission hospital in Tansen, where four of them are in critical condition.
The dead included 12 women and four children.
The bus, Lu 1 Kha 3076, fell nearly 200 metres down into a maize field at 11:30 am. Driver Dil Bahadur Saru said the mishap occurred after he swerved to avoid a boulder that was rolling down from above towards the vehicle. Immediately after the mishap, Saru contacted the police, said police inspector at the Palpa district police office Dipak Shrestha. Nineteen died on the spot, while six died while undergoing treatment at the mission hospital.
Deputy superintendent of police Bhim Prasad Dhakal, who led the rescue mission, said the accident may have occurred due to the bad condition of the road and brake failure after the vehicle’s spring plate snapped.
An injured person, Dil Bahadur Gharti of Arwathok, Gulmi, said the bus was overloaded and the driver sped past a narrow bend when the incident occurred. “The driver ignored me when I asked him not to take too many passengers into the bus. The spring plate broke and the brakes failed. The driver then jumped off the vehicle and it fell down into a maize field,” he said.
Another wounded passenger Tek Bahadur Hamal said the accident could have been averted had the driver not jumped out.
A rescue team of police from the district headquarters Tansen reached the spot soon after the accident. Palpa CDO Shambhu Ghimire also reached the site. Locals, cadres of political parties, transport entrepreneurs, travellers, health workers, teachers and school students all rushed to aid in the rescue.

10 killed, 22 injured in road accidents

DHANGADHI / DARCHULA, July 16 - At least 10 people were killed and 22 injured in three separate road accidents in Kailali, Darchula and Morang districts on Saturday and Sunday.
In Kailali, a microbus accident at Chisapani on Sunday afternoon left five persons dead and 17 others injured. The condition of six injured passengers is reported to be critical.

According to the Regional Traffic Police Office (RTPO) at Attariya, the dead have been identified as assistant sub-inspector Nar Bahadur Deuba, Nepali Army sergeant Nanda Bahadur Thapa who was stationed at Dipayal Airport, Chandra Joshi of Dhangadhi, and Anish Magar, a seven-year-old son of a Maoist stationed at Sahajpur cantonment in the district. The identity of another deceased could not be established.

Of them, three had died on the spot while the other two succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at Seti Zonal Hospital. Six of the seriously hurt were referred to Nepalgunj for treatment.

The microbus registered Se 1 Ja 175, which was en route to Dandeldhura from Dhangadhi, skidded off the road and fell some 250 meters below the road at Chisapani near Budhitola at around 2:30 pm.

According to police, there were 22 persons on board the ill-fated microbus. Mahendra Chand, chief of RTPO here said the accident occurred as the driver lost control of the overloaded speeding vehicle.

In Darchula district, four persons died and five others were injured when a jeep they were traveling in plunged into the Mahakali River at Masinbaluwa of Dhap VDC on Sunday.

The dead have been identified as Gajendra Singh Dhami, 45, Janaki Dhami, 29, Roshan Aer and Prakash Singh Bista, both five, of Dhap VDC-4.

According to police, over a dozen passengers are still missing in the river while they also could not trace the jeep in the River.

It was the only jeep that used to ply along the Darchula-Baitadi road section due to the difficult road condition.

Meanwhile in Morang district, one person died in a road accident at Pipalchowk of Biratnagar on Saturday night. According to police, Raju Pariyar of Duhabi in Sunsari, died after his motorcycle rammed into an electric pole. Seriously injured in the accident, he breathed his last while being rushed to Dharan for treatment.

Nine persons were killed and 25 injured in two separate mishaps today.
Five persons were killed and 20 injured today when a Kia microbus heading towards Dipayal of Doti district from here skidded and fell 100 metres down the road at Budhitola of Godavari VDC. The area police office said that the microbus started from Dhangadhi at 10.30 am and had hardly travelled 19 kilometres when it met with the mishap.
Assistant sub-inspector Nar Bahadur Deuba of Malakheti police post in Attariya, army havaldar Nandraj Budha of the Dah barracks in Dadeldhura, Chandra Joshi of Geta in Kailali,
seven-months-old Anish (the son of Maoist guerrilla Sansar Magar of the PLA’s Sahajpur barracks) and an unidentified person died. Deuba, Budha and Joshi died on the spot, while Anish and the unidentified person died en route to Seti zonal hospital, police said, adding the accident occurred due to a sudden steering wheel failure. Police said the microbus which had only 15 seats was carrying 26 persons.
Another report from Dhangadhi said four persons died and five were injured when a jeep skidded off the road at Musepani of Khalanga-1 and fell into the Mahakali River today. The jeep was proceeding from Darchula district’s headquarters Khalanga towards Dhaap. Darchula police said the bodies of four passengers were recovered from the spot, but the identities of the four have not been ascertained yet.
