Situala briefs parliament on landslide losses
Home Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula Sunday briefed the parliament on the loss of lives and properties in landslides in Bagalung and Bajura districts.
Minister Sitaula informed the parliament that 24 people have died and 7 were injured in series of landslides that struck various parts of Baglung district from Thursday night. He said two of the injured were shortly being airlifted to Kathmandu for treatment while others are undergoing treatment in Pokhara. He also said that 32 families had been displaced after the landslides swept away their homes.
Similarly, Minister Sitaula said five people were killed and three more inured in landslides in Bajura district, far-western region.
He said the government would provide Rs 15,000 to the surviving family members of each of the dead as immediate relief and Rs 10,000 to the displaced and injured. He said that the government would also bear all the cost of the medical treatment for those injured in the landslide.
Earlier, speaking at the ‘special time’, lawmakers from the landslides affected districts had demanded that the home minister provide details about the loss of lives and property in the recent landslide to the parliament in person.
The debate on the government’s budget estimate for the fiscal year 2007-08 continues in the House today as well.
Most of the lawmakers who took part in yesterday’s discussion had expressed their objection to the allocation of budget to the king and alleged it to be ‘urban-centric’.

At least 26 people have been feared dead with some missing and several others injured in separate landslides in two western districts.
Reports coming in say at least 21 people are feared to have died in a landslide in Gwalichour VDC and Jaljala VDC in western district of Baglung, Thursday night. A number of houses were swept away in the landslide that occurred after incessant rainfall in Gwalichaur. Those killed in the disaster could not be identified immediately. Seven people are said to be still missing in the landslide in Gwalichaur.
Gywalichour is some 30 km from the district headquarters Baglung Bazaar.
Over a dozen people were wounded in the landslide. A police team has been mobilised in the area for rescue works.
Nepali Army (NA) deployed its chopper to rescue 14 injured persons from the area. NA soldiers have been mobilised for rescue mission.
Meanwhile, 5 people including a minor were killed in a landslide in far-western Bajura district Friday morning.
Bramhatola VDC, where the landslide occurred, lies some 30 kilometers west from district headquarters.
All those killed in the calamity were labourers working in the Safebagar-Martadi road section, reports said.
The labourers who were sleeping unaware inside their tents, were killed after being buried in the landslide that hit at around 3 am in the morning.

Landslide killed as many as 21 people in Gwalichaur of Baglung District. The landslides are common phenomena in Nepal during monsoon, between the months of June and September. Environmental management is not done properly in the hills because of a totally different living standard here, that causes landslides. It is also important to knote that topography and geomorphology or the geometry of the terrain itself has to do a lot in causing landslides. After all, it is the monsoon rains that overly saturate the steep slopes of the mountains, so they have to slide for their stability. Consequence is human casualty.

A landslide hit Goulichaur village, about 280 kilometers (175 miles) west of Katmandu on Friday, killing 21 people, the chief government administrator in Baglung district, Surya Bhandari, told The Associated Press.
Bhandari said 17 people were injured and three more people were reported missing in the landslide, which swept some houses away while others were buried by debris.
An army rescue helicopter with soldiers and Red Cross rescuers was heading to this remote mountainous village to help, Bhandari said, adding that the weather was still not clear. Some soldiers were also sent on foot.
Separately, another landslide killed five people and buried parts of a village in Nepal's mountainous west on Friday, officials said.

The landslide covered three houses in Bratola village early in the morning while the victims were sleeping, said Bajura district's chief government official, Hum Prasad Adhikari. Rescuers have reached the village and recovered one body.
Adhikari said he was waiting to learn further details from the rescue team.
Bratola is about 500 kilometers (310 miles) northwest of the capital, Katmandu.
Scores of people are killed in the Himalayan nation each year during the rainy season, often by landslides in mountainous areas or flooding in the southern plains.
The Home Ministry in Katmandu said rescue helicopters have been sent to the affected areas loaded with relief materials, medicine and health workers.
Pratap Kumar Pathak, who coordinates natural disaster rescue and relief, said the helicopters would bring injured people to the nearest city of Pokhara, about 200 kilometers (125 miles) west of Katmandu.

KATMANDU, Nepal: Army helicopters dropped dozens of soldiers Saturday near a western Nepal village where a landslide killed at least 21 people and injured several others a day earlier, officials said.
Surya Bhandari, Baglung district's chief government administrator, said the soldiers would help rescuers who had already reached the village of Goulichaur.
The injured people were being airlifted to hospitals, he said.
The landslide hit Goulichaur, about 280 kilometers (175 miles) west of Katmandu, on Friday morning.
Dozens of rescuers including army soldiers, police, Red Cross volunteers and local residents have been digging through the debris since Friday.
Continuing rainfall was making rescue efforts difficult, Bhandari said.
Also Friday, another landslide killed five people and buried three houses in a Bramhatola village, about 500 kilometers (310 miles) northwest of Katmandu.
Scores of people are killed in the Himalayan nation each year during the rainy season by landslides in mountainous areas or flooding in the southern plains.

KATHMANDU, July 15 - The government has decided to provide a financial relief of Rs 15,000 each to the nearest kin of the victims of landslides in Baglung, Bajura and Jajarkot districts.
The families displaced due to the landslides will get Rs 10,000 each.
Informing the Interim Legislature-Parliament about the loss of life and property in the landslides in the remote hilly districts on Sunday, Home Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula said that a relief effort was underway in the regions with the help of Red Cross. Immediately after the House session started today, Home Minister Sitaula informed the House about the destruction caused by the heavy rain fall leading to landslides in the western hilly districts.
The minister also assured that the government would treat the injured and provide Rs 4000 to each of them.
According to the Home Minister, the landslides had left 24 dead, 7 injured and 32 house holds displaced in Baglung; 5 dead , 3 injured in Bajura; and 3 dead in Jajarkot. He also informed that a rescue team comprising of Nepal Army, Nepal Police has been mobilized in the landslide-hit villages and that food materials have been supplied with the help of Red Cross.
One of the Baglung landslides injured died today while undergoing treatment at Pokhara while another dead body was recovered from landslides site, taking the death toll in Baglung to 24.
According to our correspondent, one Devi Thapa, 21, succumbed to injuries during treatment in Pokhara. Likewise, a the dead body of one Rabin Sunar was dug out from the incident site.
Still around a dozen persons are missing in the Baglung landslides.
The landslide displaced families have been taking refugee at local schools and neighbours’ houses.
Meanwhile, a meeting of the Natural Calamity Rescue Committee this morning has decided to treat the injured, provide care-takers and assess the loss of lives and property in the disasters.
