Deadly landslides hit Nepal

Deadly landslides hit Nepal

At least 26 people have been killed by two landslides in mountainous western Nepal.

Several women and children were among the dead in one of the landslides that swept away several homes in Gwalichour village in Baglung district on Friday.

"All victims were swept away by the landslide while they were sleeping," a police officer said.

An army rescue helicopter with soldiers and Red Cross workers has been sent to the remote mountainous village, Surya Bhandari, chief administrator of Baglung district, said.

The second landslide killed five people and buried parts of Bratola village, about 500km northwest of the capital, Katmandu.

Rescuers have reached the village and recovered a body from one of the three houses which was submerged.

Pratap Kumar Pathak, who co-ordinates natural disaster rescue and relief efforts in Nepal, said helicopters would bring injured people to the nearest city of Pokhara, about 200km west of Katmandu.

Hundreds of people are killed in Nepal every year in floods and landslides, which are common during the annual monsoon rains from June to September.
