Landslide victims’ kin to get financial help

KATHMANDU, July 15 - The government has decided to provide a financial relief of Rs 15,000 each to the nearest kin of the victims of landslides in Baglung, Bajura and Jajarkot districts.
The families displaced due to the landslides will get Rs 10,000 each.

Informing the Interim Legislature-Parliament about the loss of life and property in the landslides in the remote hilly districts on Sunday, Home Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula said that a relief effort was underway in the regions with the help of Red Cross. Immediately after the House session started today, Home Minister Sitaula informed the House about the destruction caused by the heavy rain fall leading to landslides in the western hilly districts.

The minister also assured that the government would treat the injured and provide Rs 4000 to each of them.

According to the Home Minister, the landslides had left 24 dead, 7 injured and 32 house holds displaced in Baglung; 5 dead , 3 injured in Bajura; and 3 dead in Jajarkot. He also informed that a rescue team comprising of Nepal Army, Nepal Police has been mobilized in the landslide-hit villages and that food materials have been supplied with the help of Red Cross.

One of the Baglung landslides injured died today while undergoing treatment at Pokhara while another dead body was recovered from landslides site, taking the death toll in Baglung to 24.

According to our correspondent, one Devi Thapa, 21, succumbed to injuries during treatment in Pokhara. Likewise, a the dead body of one Rabin Sunar was dug out from the incident site.

Still around a dozen persons are missing in the Baglung landslides.

The landslide displaced families have been taking refugee at local schools and neighbours’ houses.

Meanwhile, a meeting of the Natural Calamity Rescue Committee this morning has decided to treat the injured, provide care-takers and assess the loss of lives and property in the disasters.
